This little guy had to stop eating at 1:00am the morning of his surgery and he didn't even wake up hungry until it was time to go to the hospital at 6:00am, what a trooper! When we arrived to the NICU they got him all set up in his warm bed, put in his IV and gave him his favorite sweeties (sugar water). He was calm and content and had no idea what he was going to be doing.
We sat for about 30 minutes with our little love before the surgeon and nurses came in to talk to us. He had the same team that he had for the first surgery which really reassured us. We said our "see you soon" and walked with him down to those famous double doors. No matter how many surgeries your little one has and no matter how well you know the surgical team, your heart still stops a little as you watch your baby get wheeled away without you by their side.
The surgery was longer than the last, but the surgeon told us that the last two weeks since his last surgery made all the difference. Everything was still small, but much bigger which made it easier. After he returned to the NICU we snuggled in our favorite rocking chair and he slept for four hours and then woke up hungry and content.
That night he slept in the NICU so that they could monitor him and make sure that he recovered well. We were fine with that because one of our favorite nurses had him that night. We sat and chatted and caught up with our favorite doctors and nurses, they really have become a second family to us. That day was also my sweet Husband's birthday so our nurse insisted on us going to a movie. I was really hesitant about leaving Karsten, but she insisted we go and celebrate while he slept. They are the most expensive babysitters, but they are the very best. I think they missed Karsten and wanted some snuggle time while we were away and we were happy to give it to them.
Karsten slept like a dream that night in his favorite snuggly bed. I also think he missed the dinging and the talking all around him. He loves noise and people talking.
The next morning he woke up in an adorable Santa's helper outfit swaddled in snowflake and igloo blankets. That crew goes above and beyond.
THANK YOU to the wonderful surgical team and the best NICU crew!

Love him!!
