Hello World!

Oh! Oh! Oh! I have some exciting news!

When Karsten was born his eyelids were fused shut. I never imagined having a premature baby who wouldn't have eyes that would open from the beginning. While I was pregnant I would get daily notifications on my phone from my pregnancy app "What to Expect". They would tell me what milestones my baby would be reaching that day/week. I could have never imagined that I would be witnessing some of those milestones with my baby here.

He would sit and raise those cute eyebrows and would try so hard to open his eyes. For the past week we have been sitting by his bedside hoping we would be there when it finally happened. The nurses all knew that they were to call us at any time of the night if he started to open those eyes and we would race over to be there. We have a picture on Karsten's bed of Ryan and I and one nurse even jokingly told us that she was planning to duck down, grab our picture and not make eye contact with him until we got there. We were covered and had our plan.

This morning I woke up with a good feeling that today would be the day. But I really wasn't expecting to be right. We arrived to the hospital early this morning for kangaroo care and our rounds with the team. Ryan and I have our routines down so I hold our boy in the morning and he holds at night. Ryan was sitting next to us and telling Karsten a story when all of a sudden I hear "Oh! He's opening them! I see his eyes! Hi Karsten (Ryan waving)" I had him on my chest and couldn't see those pretty eyes. Luckily our nurse ran in with a mirror so I could watch the excitement!

He opened and closed them about three times before falling back to sleep. It was amazing and beautiful. And even though I didn't get to see when he first lifted those eyelids, I'm glad his Daddy was able to see and that it happened while I had him in my arms.
Thank you, sweet boy, for waiting for Mommy and Daddy. I'm thankful that we experienced that together as a little family.
I love you my darling boy and I'm so excited for you to see the world.
